There are six processes in stone carving production. The first step is to select materials, which are selected according to the function, location and subject matter of the stone sculpture. For example, white marble is soft in texture and fine in texture, and is mostly used for decorative carvings in palace buildings.
The second step is to outline the surface, draw the rough outline of the carved object on the selected stone, so as to make full use of the stone and grasp the shape of the carved object. This step can be said to be the blueprint of the carving, and it is the key.
The third step is to reduce the wasteland, that is to use a hammer and a chisel to chisel off the large excess part, and the smaller part can be subtracted with the help of a cutting machine. The combination of manual and machine waste reduction makes the outline of the stone carving roughly shaped.
The fourth step is to sort out the shape, also known as roughening, that is, the master stone carver uses visual measurement skills and artistic techniques to accurately position some small parts of the sculpture, and roughly carves them out, and the places that need to be hollowed out The technique of sketching and digging is called face-opening technique.
The fifth step is fine carving. This process is also called thinning, that is, on the basis of roughening, all the detailed lines are drawn, and the details are carved clearly. The place is trimmed and cleaned.
The sixth step is sanding. The first is sandstone grinding. Coarse and fine sandstones are used to polish the surface of the sculpture once, and then the surface is polished with emery cloth. The coarse and fine emery cloths are repeatedly polished until matte or reflective.
