Large-scale sculpture refers to sculptures with a certain height and a certain decorative effect on the environment. At present, the large-scale sculpture materials on the market are generally marble sculpture, cement, metal, sandstone, glass steel and so on. So, what kind of materials are the sculptures we see outdoors?
Marble carving is divided into granite sculpture and marble carving. Granite is hard and difficult to be eroded by acid and alkali or weathering, while marble carving has a soft, beautiful and solemn texture and elegant style. Therefore, in general, granite sculptures are recommended for outdoor use, while marble sculptures are recommended for indoor use.
Cement sculpture is made of galvanized steel plate as the keel and cement as the main material. Cement sculpture is also a very common sculpture material at present. Because of its strong plasticity and resistance to wind and sun, it has strong resistance to the atmosphere, water and general concentrations of acids, alkalis, salts, and various oils and solvents. And the longer the time, the stronger the ability to resist pressure.
Metal sculptures are available in three materials: wrought copper, cast copper, and stainless steel. Wrought copper is relatively light, while cast copper has a very long history and mature technology. However, copper products are easy to oxidize, so more attention should be paid to maintenance, and they are usually only stored indoors. Stainless steel requires the sculpture itself to be simple and elegant, with a clear sense of shape, strong light and shadow effects, and a very large choice of colors. It is more common outdoors.
Sandstone sculpture is composed of clasts and interstitials. The clastic composition is mainly quartz. As a sculpture material, sandstone must have chemical substances as the medium. Sandstone exists more as reliefs inside buildings and is widely used in buildings. The Louvre, the British Royal Palace, the U.S. Capitol, Harvard University, Notre Dame de Paris, etc. all use sandstone reliefs, which can reflect the long history and noble and elegant temperament of sandstone.
As for FRP sculpture, it has good transparency, high temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, glass is fragile, so FRP is not used much as a sculpture material.
So in general, the sculptures we see outdoors are basically cement sculptures and stainless steel sculptures.
